A visit to Iraq

Gov. Romney made an unexpected visit to Iraq yesterday. Important quotes from the governor:

``It would be a severe mistake for us to cut and run," the governor said yesterday in a telephone interview from Kuwait City just hours after he arrived from Baghdad. The potential sectarian strife that could ensue if the United States pulled out suddenly, he said, ``could lead to a humanitarian disaster."

Of course the memories of his father's trip to Vietnam will be brought up again. No biggie there.

Immigration

Well, President Bush has made things worse.

I've already posted my general thoughts here and I continue to believe much the same. The fact is that we've reached a tipping point and I believe that the members of the House are the only thing that stands between the GOP and a Democrat sweep in November.

The only hope for Republicans is for the whole thing to just go away. A lot of damage has undeniably been done to the party by the president and the RINOs in the Senate (including Sen. McCain giving us reason #5,821 never to allow him to become president). The only damage control we can possibly do at this point is to kill the bill in conference and pray that the Democrats don't gain enough votes in 6 months to push an even worse one through next year.

This whole thing is just maddening because it boils down to pandering politics and it's not even going to work.

Sink or Swim?

Hate to benefit from natural disaters, but the Boston Hearald has a piece on Gov. Romney's prospects in dealing with the recent flooding in Massachusettes.

This isn't a high profile disaster so nationally it won't make much difference unless the governor blows it or, more likely, the media makes it look like he blew it.

Voters think Romney is pretty

This piece is supposed to be bad news for the governor, but there are worse things than to be shown to a nationwide audience, most of them for the first time, and have people think you're good-looking. Give Gov. Romney the time to prove himself in front of the American public and the negatives will disappear.

Congratulations to the Romney family

Parker Mitt Romney was born Tuesday. He is the first child of Gov. Romney's youngest son Craig and his wife Mary. This is the governor's 9th grandchild.

Powerline on Romney

Powerline's Paul Mirengoff was kind enough to call Gov. Romney "In many respects, Gov. Mitt Romney is the most attractive potential presidential nominee the Republicans have. He is bright, good-looking, articulate, and conservative", before getting back to the tired Mormon business.

By the time '08 rolls around, I'm sure we'll all be sick of hearing about it.
